When I Realized Design Was About More Than Creating Beautiful Spaces

Ever since I was studying Interior Design at the University of Guadalajara, I had the opportunity to work at an interior design firm while attending school. It was there that I learned one of the most important lessons of this profession: design is not simply about creating beautiful spaces, but about learning to listen to people and understanding how they want to live within their spaces.

Over time, I discovered that clients often know exactly how they want to feel in their home, even if they do not always know how to bring that feeling to life. Learning how to guide them, help them visualize possibilities, and find functional solutions became one of the experiences that shaped my early years the most.

More than 26 years ago, I arrived in Los Cabos with the intention of working for an interior design firm. However, things did not go as expected, and the job I had been promised never paid me. At that moment, I had two options: return to Guadalajara or try to build something on my own.

I decided to stay.

I sold my car to support myself for a few months and literally started knocking on doors so people could get to know me. Entrepreneurship was born more out of necessity than from a carefully planned business strategy, but it was also born from the conviction that I could move forward doing what I was most passionate about.

Of course, I was afraid. I had been living with my parents in Guadalajara, and suddenly I had to worry about rent, food, and finding work. My biggest fear was not knowing whether there would be another project after the current one. But I also knew Los Cabos was a place full of opportunity, and I have never been someone who gives up easily.

With time, I came to understand that interior design goes far beyond aesthetics. The spaces we inhabit deeply influence how we live, rest, work, and feel. Many people become accustomed to living in spaces that do not truly work for them, when in reality, spaces should adapt to our lives — not the other way around.

And perhaps that is why we continue doing what we do.

Because a thoughtfully designed space can completely transform the experience of the people who live in it. It can bring calm, comfort, order, inspiration, and well-being. It can become the place where a family builds memories, where someone finally feels at peace, or where a person reconnects with who they are through their home.

Over the years, I have learned so much, especially from mistakes. I remember one occasion when a client insisted on doing something “cheap,” and not long after, problems began to appear. That experience confirmed something I still strongly believe today: quality work costs more, but it lasts.

Our work is not simply about making a space look beautiful. It is about creating functional, lasting, and authentic spaces designed to improve the lives of the people who inhabit them.

The most valuable part of this journey has been the trust people place in us. Many clients have worked their entire lives to build the home of their dreams, and being welcomed into that process is something deeply meaningful. With many of them, the relationship grows far beyond the project itself.

And probably that is what continues to motivate me most after all these years: seeing the emotion on someone’s face when they feel their space truly reflects who they are.

Today, I continue learning with every project. I still believe that design has the power to transform the way we live, and that work done with care and integrity will always find its path.
